Privacy

This is a personal blog. It has no accounts, no comment section, no forms and no database. Nothing here asks you for your data, and there is nothing to sign up for.

What follows describes what happens anyway, simply because the site is on the internet.

Who is responsible

Michael Dickmann — reachable at privacy@michael-dickmann.net.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel Inc. As with any web host, its servers record technical data when a page is requested: IP address, time, the requested URL, referrer, browser and operating system. This happens before any of my own code runs, and it is what makes delivering a page possible at all. I do not merge these logs with anything else and do not use them to identify individual visitors.

Analytics

I use GoatCounter (dickmann.goatcounter.com, script loaded from gc.zgo.at) to see which posts get read. I picked it because it is deliberately frugal:

  • it sets no cookies
  • it does not store your IP address
  • it does not track you across sites, and there is no profile of you anywhere in it

What it records is a page view, roughly where in the world it came from, and which site linked here. That is the entire extent of the analytics on this site.

Fonts

Web fonts are served from this domain. Next.js downloads them at build time, so your browser never contacts Google to render this page — no request, no IP address, nothing.

Local storage

If you switch between light and dark mode, that choice is stored in your own browser's local storage. It never reaches my server, and it is not a cookie. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Links to other sites

Some pages link to Bluesky, GitHub or LinkedIn. Following such a link takes you to a service with its own rules, which I neither control nor speak for.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask what data relating to you is processed, and request correction, deletion or restriction. Given the above there is realistically very little to ask about — but the right exists, and the address at the top reaches me. You may also complain to a supervisory authority.

Changes

If what the site does changes, this page changes with it.

Verifying this page

This page is OpenPGP-signed. To check that the text above is unchanged and really came from me, follow the three steps on Verify authenticity and use privacy as the slug.
